DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

The same few foods.
The same daily question.

“What can I offer that my child might feel comfortable exploring?”

You know the foods they trust. But choosing what to try next can leave you second-guessing every meal.

  • The familiar favourites, again.

Your child keeps asking for the same foods, and new options often stay untouched.

  • Plenty of advice. No clear next step.

You have ideas saved, but you’re unsure which one makes sense for your child.

  • You want variety without the pressure.

You want a way to explore foods without turning every meal into a negotiation.

A PLACE TO BEGIN

Start with the child in front of you.

Calm Plate is a set of four connected PDF guides and workbooks for parents of picky eaters. Use them to notice your child’s preferences, organise a plan, and choose small, pressure-free steps from foods they already know.

Designed for parents of children ages 2–5, with tools that can also be adapted for older picky eaters.

You don’t need to change every meal at once. Begin by understanding their starting point.

FROM IDEAS TO EVERYDAY STEPS

A way to connect the dots.
And choose what comes next.

You may already have recipes saved and plenty of advice. The difficult part is knowing which idea fits your child — and how to put it into practice.

Calm Plate connects what you notice, what you plan, and what you try through guides and worksheets you fill in around your child.

  1. 01

    Notice what feels familiar.

Use the Child Food Blueprint to record foods your child trusts and notice patterns in texture, smell, and presentation.

Your starting point: observations about your child.
  2. 02

Turn those observations into a plan.

Use the Food Expansion Builder’s maps and Food Ladder templates to organise possible next steps from familiar foods.

Your next step: a plan you can refer back to.
  3. 03

    Try, observe, and adjust.

Use the 30-Day Expansion Roadmap to bring your plan into everyday meals, record your child’s responses, and reflect as you go.

Your routine: small steps, with room to adapt.
ALONG THE WAY

Keep the Calm Plate Safety Guide close for no-pressure principles, difficult days, and guidance on when to pause or seek professional support.

The four resources work together, so each step builds on what you’ve already learned about your child.

Recognise more than tasting

Explore the guide’s examples of small changes, from tolerating a food nearby to interacting with it.

TRY THE FIRST EXERCISE

Think back to one recent meal.

  1. Write down the last new food your child refused.
  2. Notice what happened: did they look, touch, smell, taste, or refuse?
  3. Record what you observed, without asking them to repeat it.

That is the starting point: observing your child before deciding what to try next.

START WITH WHAT THEY ALREADY LOVE

You already know their favourite foods.
That’s where your plan begins.

You don’t need a whole new menu. Begin with the foods your child already knows and trusts, then turn your observations into one manageable next step.

  1. 01

    CHILD FOOD BLUEPRINT

    Write down their familiar foods.

Note the foods your child currently eats. Look beyond the name: do they prefer a particular texture, shape, temperature, or way of serving it?

Those everyday details give you something concrete to build on.

  2. 02

    FOOD EXPANSION BUILDER

    Choose one direction to explore.

Use your Safe Food and Target Food Maps to organise familiar foods and choose a food to work towards. Then use a Food Ladder worksheet to plan smaller changes between the two.

You fill in the plan using your observations of your child.

  3. 03

    30-DAY EXPANSION ROADMAP

Bring one small step into your routine.

Record your chosen step and what happens. Notice their response—even if they only look at the food or feel comfortable having it nearby.

Observe and adjust. No pressure to taste, and no deadline for acceptance.

Keep your Safety Guide close.

When a step feels difficult, use it to reflect on what happened, consider when to pause, and recognise when professional support may be needed.

YOUR FIRST TASK IS SIMPLE

List the foods your child already trusts.

You don’t have to figure out the entire plan today. Start with that list, and work through the connected tools one step at a time.

MADE FOR EVERYDAY MEALS

A small place in your day.
Not a whole new routine.

You don’t need to change every meal or finish every worksheet at once. Use Calm Plate to bring one manageable step into the routine you already have.

KEEP IT FAMILIAR

Start with meals you already serve.

Keep familiar foods as your starting point. Choose one opportunity to explore a planned step, instead of trying to change breakfast, lunch, and dinner together.

KEEP IT FOCUSED

Use the page you need now.

Begin with the Blueprint, then work through the planning tools as you need them. Keep the Safety Guide nearby, and leave the remaining worksheets for later.

KEEP IT FLEXIBLE

Let the plan fit your family.

Use the Roadmap to record what happens and review your next step. The 30 days provide structure—not a deadline for your child to accept a food.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • ✓

A way to read your PDFs. Use a phone, tablet, or computer. No app installation is required.

  • ✓

A place to write. Print the worksheets, or keep your observations in a notebook while following the guides.

  • ✓

Time to read, plan, and notice. The effort depends on the page and the step you choose. Work through a manageable part at a time.

WHAT A SMALL START COULD LOOK LIKE

Read the observation exercise when you have a quiet moment. At a usual meal, notice how your child responds. Afterwards, write one short note to return to when you plan.

One observation. One note. A place to begin.

SMALL STEPS. ROOM TO ADJUST.

What if they say no?
You still have a next step.

You don’t have to turn a difficult meal into a test. Calm Plate gives you tools to pause, notice, and review your plan—without making a bite the goal of every meal.

What if my child won’t try the food?

You don’t need to insist on a taste. Record what happened, then return to your Food Ladder and Safety Guide. Consider whether the planned change felt too big, or whether it is time to pause and revisit a more familiar step.

The worksheet is there to help you understand their response, not to pressure them into completing a step.

What if 30 days pass without a big change?

The 30 days are a planning framework, not a promise or a deadline. Use your notes and weekly reviews to look at what happened and what remained difficult. There is no required number of new foods to reach.

You can revisit your plan at your child’s pace. If concerns remain, seek individual guidance rather than feeling you must keep repeating the same approach.

What can I record besides tasting?

Note whether your child looked at the food, allowed it nearby, touched it, or seemed more or less comfortable. You can also record refusal or a difficult moment.

These are observations to help you review your plan. They do not guarantee that your child will later accept the food.

When should I ask for professional support?

You do not need to wait until Day 30 to ask for help. If you are concerned about your child’s eating, health, or wellbeing, speak with their healthcare professional for individual advice.

The Safety Guide includes signs that call for professional support. It is a reference, not a tool for diagnosing a feeding difficulty or deciding whether care is needed.

A plan to guide you. Room to listen to your child.

You can pause, review, and ask for support. You don’t have to force the next step.

Calm Plate provides educational resources and planning tools. It does not replace medical advice, nutritional assessment, or feeding therapy. Every child’s experience is different; specific feeding outcomes are not guaranteed.

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE CHOOSING

You deserve a clear picture.
Before you buy.

Choosing something for your child deserves more than a promise. See what is inside Calm Plate, how the tools connect, and where their role begins and ends.
